What's the Difference Between Dealers and Artists?

The differences between registered dealers and sitting artists are often subtle, especially since we might put them in the same room together.  The distinction isn't important to most attendees, but it is important if you have something to sell:

  1. Dealers must register in advance of the convention, pay a small additional fee for their booth, and obtain a tax license for Ohio.  This process is described in detail further down on the page.  Artists may simply show up at the convention and sell, without any advance preparation.

  2. Dealers must maintain tax records and pay sales tax to the state of Ohio for the sales they make at Morphicon.  Artists pay calculated sales tax to Morphicon at the end of each session in which they sell goods.  Morphicon, in turn, handles paying the cumulative tax for the artists' sales to the state of Ohio.

  3. Dealers are guaranteed a specific six-foot (8') booth space to sell at for the duration of the convention.  Artists aren't guaranteed any space at all.  Artists that do get space may end up with less table space than the space allowed for dealers, generally four-feet (4').  If space permits, a dealer may be allowed to purchase more than one table, but an artist will not be allowed more space than the initial offering given to them, even if extra space is available.

  4. Dealers may store their wares in the dealer's room overnight.  Artists must pack up and return to wait in line the following day.

  5. Artists must wait in line in the morning to claim a space.  Space is doled out on a first-come, first-serve basis.  If space is severely limited, an artist may be forced to move after setting up shop for a certain period of time, so that artists may be rotated.  There is never a guarantee that space will be available for an artist.

  6. Dealers may sell anything they have a legal right to sell, provided the material is relevant to our attendees.  Artists may only sell artwork and creative goods they themselves have produced.

  7. Dealers and artists alike will both be required to sign our dealer's code of conduct in order to sell at Morphicon.  Selling materials at Morphicon is a privilege we can and will revoke if this code of conduct is not properly followed, so please take it seriously.

Information for Prospective Morphicon 2008 Dealers

All dealers will be required to maintain their own taxes.  Dealers must have the pertinent seller's permit to be allowed to sell at Morphicon.  The tax rate in our area is currently 6.75%, so plan your pricing accordingly if you choose to calculate your taxes after-cost.

Before you will be allowed to sell materials as a dealer you must produce and show a your Ohio Transient Vendor's License to Morphicon staff checking you in.  Getting your Transient Vendor's License is easy.  Click here to download the Adobe Acrobat file and register.  The licencing fee costs $25. (You may visit Adobe for a free copy of Acrobat Reader.)

The cost of a 2008 dealers table is $15, plus you must be a registered attendee (which requires the standard donation of $30 per person).   Anyone with a valid registration may man or share a dealer's table with that dealer, provided that the dealer in question attends the convention in person and handles all the sales tax for items sold at her booth.

Potential dealers should also browse the convention policy page.  Dealers (and artists) are expected to abide by both the policy for dealers and the conduct policy for convention attendees.  Anyone selling from a dealer's table will be required to sign a copy of both policies before they can sell.

If you have questions about this process (or about Artist's Alley) or if you would like to be a dealer at Morphicon 2008, please contact Dealers Staff for information about the availability of dealer space.  If there's still space, we can take your application by email.
